1. PRESENT CONTINUOS TENSE/PRESENT PROGRESSIVE


1.1 USE

The Present Progressive is used when we talk about something which is happening now. It is also called Present Continuous. Have a look at the following examples:

 

1)      actions happening at the moment of speaking (now, at the moment)

Acciones que pasan al momento en que se está hablando

Peter is reading a book now.
She
’s listening to the radio.


2)      fixed plan in the near future.

Planes fijados para el futuro cercano

She is going to Basel on Saturday.

3)      temporary actions

Acciones temporales

His father is working in Rome this month.

4)      actions happening around the moment of speaking (longer actions)

Acciones que pasan cerca al momento en que se está hablando

 My friend is preparing for his exams.


5)      trends

Tendencias

 More and more people are using their computers to listen to music.

 

6)      Repeated actions which are irritating to the speaker (with always, constantly, forever)

Acciones repetidas que están irritando al que habla.

Andrew is always coming late. (I don't like it.)


1.2 RULES OF FORMATION


For many verbs we make the ING form by simply adding -ING to end of the verb.
·         eat – eating
·         speak – speaking
·         cook – cooking
·         start – starting
·         do – doing
·         stay – staying
·         fix – fixing
·         try – trying
Verbs ending with -e   Verbos que terminan en E
Drop the -e and add ING
·         hope – hoping
·         ride – riding
·         make – making
·         write – writing
Verbs ending with -ee  - verbos que terminan en EE
Just add -ING
·         agree – agreeing
·         flee – fleeing
·         see – seeing
Verbs ending with -ie    Verbos que terminan en IE
Change the -ie to -y and add -ING
·         die – dying
·         tie – tying
·         lie – lying
Verbs ending with one vowel and one consonant  - Verbos que terminan en vocal y consonante
For one syllable verbs
double the consonant and add -ING
·         jog – jogging
·         sit – sitting
·         run – running
·         stop – stopping

3. THAT'S GREAT -THAT'S TOO BAD


Cuando alguien nos esta contando algun suceso, podemos mostrar que estamos interesados y atentos a aquello que nos está contando Utilizando las expresiones: THAT'S TOO BAD (que mal!) o THAT'S GREAT (que bien!)

Let's look at some examples here:
Asi como estas expresiones, también podemos usar las siguientes:

THAT'S FANTASTIC :            Eso es fantastico/ Fantastico!
THAT'S TERRIFIC:                 Eso es genial/genial!
THAT'S GOOD:                       Eso es bueno/ que bueno
THAT'S AWFUL:                     Eso es horrible/ que horrible
THAT'S TERRIBLE:                 Eso es terrible/ que terrible
THAT'S REALLY FUN:           Eso es realmente divertido/ que divertdo
THAT'S DESSAPOINTING:    Eso es decepcionante/ que decepcionante
